Toby's Fencing Academy is a fencing program that is created for making fencing fun and affordable for kids. The owner Natalia Toby, is a professional fencer hoping to compete in the 2024 Olympic games and came up with this program to expose the next generation to the sport that she loves. She grew up with people not know what fencing is, and part of that was due to how expensive the sport it is. “There are competitive clubs charging hundreds or even thousands a month to fence and I always felt like this was the reason why a lot of people didn’t start or continue fencing. I want the United States to be like Europe, where you can say you are a fencer and people know the sport instead of referencing the Parent Trap.

I want fencing to be a popular sport by the time I retire, and that begins with exposing kids to fencing” says Natalia. She came up with “Toby's Fencing Academy” to offer an affordable program for kids. This fun class is a great way to stay active and also practice an Olympic sport in a low key way. No experience required, no equipment required, just a willingness to fight! Classes start for ages 6 and up and are located at 66 South Fullerton Ave, Montclair NJ. Classes are every Tuesday and Thursday from 4-5 pm and start August 3rd!

Bio: Natalia Toby, founder of Toby Fencing Academy

I started fencing my freshman-year off high school when I found a fencing program just like the one that I am doing now. The camp counselor told me I should continue to fence and he became my coach for 6 years. I got a full scholarship to fence at Fairleigh Dickinson University where I became the caption for 3 years, was awarded best female athlete of the year twice, qualified for NCAA 3 consecutive years in a row, got all American twice, and was 7th in the country for college 2x in a row.

While I was fencing in college I was also fencing nationally and in 2018 I got a gold medal with my team at a North American competition.

When I graduated with my degree in Marketing (during the pandemic) I reached out to one of the best coaches in the world for fencing to see if I can train with him. Daniel Levavasseur has trained over 20 Olympic gold medalists and had the number one fencer in the world when I contacted him.

In March of 2020, he said that I can train with him and his team to work on my goal of going to the 2024 Olympics. It took me 10 months of waiting (mostly due to the pandemic) to make my way over to France where I trained with a coach who didn’t know English and I didn’t know French. I didn’t know anyone and the training was the most intensive thing I’ve ever seen but I took the leap because I believed that this was the only way to get to the Olympics.

Now I am 27th in the country and am very confident that my 2024 dream might come true!

Keep finding your family fun!
