What is something important that you wish all parents with babies knew?

New mommies should know that through a process called “vertical transmission”, the microflora or bacteria that causes decay, is easily transmissible by the baby's primary caregiver. It’s important that moms also have good oral hygiene while pregnant and nursing.

What is the average # of cavities a child has before they are 18?

Unfortunately, tooth decay is rather common in children – it is preventable with excellent oral hygiene and diet practices, however, dental caries still remains one of the most common diseases that affect children of all ages. By the age of 4, more than 1 in every 4 children has at least one cavity.

At what age are kids successfully able to brush their teeth on their own?

The best way to learn a proper brushing technique and establish a good homecare routine starts with your Dental Hygienist. Our office does customized prevention plans to get families off to a strong start. Kids are super motivated to brush and floss when they feel a sense of independence. However, I always tell parents to monitor and check on kids’ brushing and flossing until they are able to clip their own fingernails.
