Are cavities contagious?

The bacteria that cause cavities (Streptococcus mutans) can be transferred from a parent’s mouth to a child’s through shared utensils, kissing on the mouth, or even testing food before feeding it to the baby. This can increase the child’s risk of developing cavities early.

To help prevent this: Avoid sharing spoons, forks, or cups with your baby. Don’t clean pacifiers by putting them in your mouth—rinse them with water instead. Maintain your own oral health! If parents have untreated cavities, they can spread cavity-causing bacteria to their children.

What is the truth about fluoride and children in Montclair?

About 15% of New Jersey residents receive fluoridated water, significantly lower than the national average of 75%. Given the absence of fluoride in Montclair's tap water, children may not receive sufficient fluoride for optimal dental health.

To prevent this: Fluoride is essential in preventing tooth decay by strengthening tooth enamel. Therefore fluoride supplements might be beneficial for children in this area. However, it's crucial to consult with a pediatrician or dentist before starting any supplementation. They can assess your child's specific needs and recommend appropriate fluoride sources, such as supplements or topical applications like fluoride toothpaste. It's also important to monitor the total fluoride intake to avoid overexposure, which can lead to dental fluorosis—a condition causing white spots on the teeth. Professional guidance ensures your child receives the right amount of fluoride for their dental health without exceeding recommended levels.

How much toothpaste should I have my child(ren) use? What is the proper technique for effective cleaning?

Toothpaste Amount:

  • Under age 3: Use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).
  • Ages 3-6: Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Many parents mistakenly use too much toothpaste, which can lead to excess fluoride ingestion and increase the risk of dental fluorosis (white streaks or spots on teeth).

Brushing Technique: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush twice a day (morning and night). Angle the brush at 45 degrees toward the gumline and use gentle circular motions—don’t scrub too hard. Brush for two full minutes—using a timer or a fun song can help! Help or supervise brushing until your child has the dexterity to tie their own shoes (usually around age 6-7).

Make brushing fun and turn it from a chore into an activity your kids look forward to with the following 5 ways:

  1. Use a Fun Toothbrush & Toothpaste: Let your child pick out their own toothbrush with their favorite character or a fun design. Try a toothbrush that lights up, plays music, or has a timer to make it more exciting. Use kid-friendly flavored toothpaste (bubblegum, watermelon, etc.) to make brushing more appealing.
  2. Play a Brushing Song or Video Play a 2-minute song: (like the “Brush Your Teeth” song by Elmo) to help them brush for the full time. There are also interactive brushing apps (like Disney Magic Timer or Brush DJ) that make the process engaging.
  3. Make It a Game Challenge them to “defeat the sugar bugs” by brushing every tooth: Try a toothbrushing chart with stickers—reward consistent brushing with a prize. Turn brushing into a silly face contest in the mirror!
  4. Brush Together Kids love copying their parents, so make it a family activity: Show them how you brush and let them “help” brush your teeth to keep them engaged.
  5. Set Up a Fun Routine Create a brushing countdown (like “5, 4, 3, 2, 1… Brush!”): Use a stuffed animal or toy to demonstrate brushing before they start.
