Early Smile Success - Check Ups Recommended by Age 7

Recommendation from Dr. Jacy from Montclair's Papasikos Orthodontics

Dr. Jacy Papasikos of Papasikos Orthodontics is aligning with the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) in recommending that children have their first orthodontic evaluation no later than age 7.

While many people associate orthodontics with teenagers, Dr. Papasikos emphasizes that earlier check-ups can identify subtle issues with jaw development, airway, and tooth alignment while baby teeth are still present. “By age 7, enough permanent teeth have emerged for us to evaluate how a child’s teeth and jaw are developing,” says Dr. Papasikos. “Catching concerns early can make treatment easier and more effective.”

“A narrow palate can do more than affect a child’s smile—it can restrict the airway and lead to sleep issues like pediatric sleep apnea.” says Dr. Papasikos. “Poor sleep is often linked to symptoms that resemble ADHD, including trouble concentrating and hyperactivity. We focus on early evaluation because correcting these issues through orthodontics can support better breathing, sleep, and overall health.

Common signs that a child may need an orthodontic check-up include mouth breathing, thumb sucking, early or late loss of baby teeth, speech issues, or teeth that appear crowded or misaligned. Even if no immediate treatment is needed, early evaluations provide peace of mind and a clear path forward. Dr. Papasikos, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and Temple University’s orthodontic specialty program, is specially trained to diagnose and treat problems with jaw and tooth alignment. Orthodontists undergo two to three additional years of education beyond dental school to ensure expert care. In addition to caring for smiles in his Montclair office, Dr. Papasikos visits local elementary schools each year to teach students about oral health and the importance of dental hygiene. These school visits are part of his ongoing commitment to raising awareness and promoting healthy habits among children in the community.
