In with the Old, In with the New

By Jessica Kline, Publisher and Editor Macaroni Kid Clifton-Montclair February 10, 2026

As we start the new year (hopefully a happy and healthy one) and a new semester of Music TogetherⓇ, we are introducing all new songs, but it’s also important to keep the old ones at hand. ✨ Children learn by repetition.

Children learn by repetition. Why?

Well, first of all, someone once remarked that no child ever said, “That was fun! Now let’s do something different!” Children are likely to want to hang on to and repeat pleasant activities such as favorite songs from their Music Togethers (or from their favorite Ms. Rachel videos!). Additionally, repeating things helps solidify the neural connections in the brain that are being formed in early childhood. And there are lots of connections being made: more than 1 million every second in the first years of life (Center on the Developing Child, Harvard University). Those connections and neural pathways support future learning. That includes music learning! Singing those same songs with your child supports music development as well as brain development. But then there are infants.

While toddlers' and preschoolers' brain growth relies on repetition of stimuli and experiences, babies are stimulated by new experiences. Ever wonder why that magical baby hold that calmed your fussy infant yesterday doesn’t work today? Your baby’s brain wants to be stimulated in a new way. Exposing your baby to new experiences (and new songs!) supports their rapidly growing brain.

And then there are adults! We like to be stimulated by new things too! We get tired of reading the same stories or singing the same songs over and over. Like infants, we need something new.

So, at Music Together, we have it all! In our classes, we sing from a varied collection of songs for a full ten weeks, giving families access to digital recordings to keep the learning going at home.

Then, every semester, we sing from a new collection of songs to keep those babies (and us) interested and inspired. But the old songs don’t go away! Each family retains access to the recordings so you can go back and revisit favorite songs as much as your child (and you) want to.
