We asked the well-known orthodontist team in Montclair, Papasikos Orthodontics, all our pressing questions for cavity prevention, fluoride, brushing techniques, and even the right amount of toothpaste! Let us know which you find most helpful. As a gift to Macaroni KID readers, Papasikos Orthodontics provided us with a FREE Certificate from the Tooth Fairy for your child! They're only little for so long.

February is Children’s Dental Health Month, a time to spotlight the importance of oral health and the lifelong benefits of strong dental habits started early. Healthy teeth play a key role in a child’s overall well-being, supporting proper nutrition, confidence, and success in school.

Dental issues such as cavities are among the most common — and most preventable — childhood health concerns. Without proper care, they can lead to pain, difficulty eating, missed school days, and problems concentrating in class. That’s why education and early intervention are so important.

Each February, Dr. Jacy Papasikos of Papasikos Orthodontics helps bring that education directly to students by visiting local schools and speaking with children about the importance of good dental hygiene. During these visits, Dr. Papasikos explains proper brushing and flossing techniques, discusses how diet affects teeth, and encourages kids to take an active role in caring for their smiles.

Supporting Healthy Smiles at Home

Parents and caregivers can reinforce these lessons with a few simple daily habits:

  • Start dental care early and brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss once teeth touch
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks
  • Schedule regular dental checkups
  • Keep oral care positive and age-appropriate

Children’s Dental Health Month serves as a reminder that education, prevention, and consistent care can make a lasting difference. With support from families and professionals like Dr. Papasikos, children can build healthy habits — and healthy smiles — that last well beyond February.
